FAQ’s

Why is zinc oxide used in EltaMD sunscreens?

Zinc oxide is the only single ingredient that blocks both UVA and UBV rays, including the long UVA rays that have been linked to photoaging and skin cancer. It has been used safely on the skin for many years, even on babies!

What does the Skin Cancer Foundation say about the EWG reports on sunscreen ingredients?

What is the difference between UVA and UVB rays?

UVA rays are the rays that cause premature aging and long-term sun damage. They can pass through glass (like car windows), and are present all year round. They are not changed by weather or altitude, and are 20 times more abundant in the atmosphere than UVB rays.

UVB rays are the rays that cause burning. These rays cause sunburns or tanning and vary with the seasons…for example, UVB rays are more abundant in the summer. UVB rays increase at high altitudes and near the equator, and they make up only 5.0% of the sun’s rays. The SPF factor on sunscreen labels only indicates the level of protection from UVB rays, and the FDA is working on new labeling requirements that will help consumers measure the amount of UVA protection offered.

UVB rays are related to 90% of non-melanoma skin cancers and have been linked to cataracts.

What is your best product?

EltaMD offers eight sunscreens and a line of skin care products designed for all skin types – even the most sensitive skin. Please consult with your physician about the formula that is right for your skin type and lifestyle.

Why can’t I buy EltaMD products directly from you?

As part of our commitment to complete skin care, we are committed to encouraging regular visit to your physician or health care provider. At regular checkups, your doctor should examine your skin to identify any potential problems. Also, health care providers can help identify the appropriate skin care and sun care product for your skin. For the best results, always use any skin care product according to your doctor’s instructions.

What antioxidants are used in your sunscreen products?

Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E) is in all EltaMD sunscreens because it is very heat stable and color stable, but also works quite well as an antioxidant to absorb free radicals. Free radicals are much more likely to be generated by the chemical sunscreen active ingredients, compared to the physical sunscreen active ingredient of zinc oxide. Because EltaMD sunscreens are formulated with a high level of zinc oxide as one active ingredient, our formulas minimize the chemical sunscreen actives and their free radicals. As a result, Tocopheryl Acetate is generally sufficient as an antioxidant for our sunscreens.

Is Oxybenzone in EltaMD products?

No. EltaMD products do not contain Oxybenzone.
